「深い技術」と「早い技術」

ネット企業は技術志向の経営を--梅田望夫氏が語るウェブの進化 - CNET Japan

そういう「深い技術」と「早い技術」がネットの世界にあって、この「深い技術」を極めようという気が、今の日本のネット産業の中に全くないのだろうなということですよね。

利用者としては、いくら「深い技術」と言ったって、それができあがってオープンソース化されればサービスのコンポーネントとして使えばいいじゃないかというのは、正しい考え方の1つではあるのです。

僕としてもこの「深い技術」に対しては非常に問題意識があります。例えば、Googleも最初はリンク・ポピュラリティというアルゴリズムがあって、サービスを開始していったわけですが、ある地点からもう既存のオープンソースソフトウェアでは対応できなくなり、分散ファイルシステム（Google File System）や言語（Sawzall）を開発するに至りました。

このポイントまで到達すると、大手（Yahoo!やMicrosoft）が本気で追いつこうとしても数年でも大きな差が開いてしまっており、技術的優位が確立します。最近Yahoo!デベロッパーネットワークを使って遊んでみたのですが、やはり精度はまだまだと感じましたし、そもそもYahoo!JAPANがなぜ日本でYahoo Publisher's Network（YPN、Yahoo!版AdSense）をやらないのかも根本的に技術力が追いついてないということなのでしょう。

※この他にスーパーノード他の概念で独創的なP2Pテクノロジーを作り上げIP電話の限界を破ったSkypeも「深い技術」ですね。

一方、日本では、はてなやMixi、ライブドアなどがオープンソフトウェアをうまく活用し、負荷分散を行っていることが技術勉強会やセミナーなどでオープンにされていて、すばらしい技術力を持っていることが分かります。ただ、GoogleのようにRDMSから作ってます、というネット企業は聞いたことがありません（もし、あったら是非ご指摘いただければ）。

これからはテクノロジーだけではなく、ビジョンやサービス的要素もかなり重要なファクターになってくるとは思うのですが、サービスであればリアルなサービス業だったり、ゲーム会社などの方が圧倒的なノウハウがあります。

したがって、ウノウのような会社は、「早い技術」だけではなく「深い技術」まで到達し、コアな部分を押さえる戦略が重要なのではないかと考えています。逆に優秀なエンジニアが発見した「深い技術」の方から創造される価値もたくさんあるでしょう。

まぁ普段は、まだまだ「早い技術」すらおぼつかないのですが、常に危機感を持ち、可能ならば「深い技術」を持てるようにチャンスを狙っていこうと思います。
